At the beginning of the 19th century when coffee production was in its early beginnings in America, without knowing it, two pioneers and entrepreneurs; Alejo C. Jimnez in Costa Rica and Wilhelm Kahle in the south of Mexico - shared the same dream. Both aspired to produce "the best coffee in the world” to satisfy the new demand in Europe for gourmet quality. Today, descendants of these visionary farmers still produce coffee within the same ideals of excellency and top quality that inspired their ancestors, continuing the tradition at Volcan Azul farm in Costa Rica.
The Geisha varietal was brought from the Gesha region in Ethiopia to the Catie institute in Costa Rica in the 1950's. This particular variety was introduced to Volcan Azul in 2012, and had its first outstanding harvest in 2016, where it was chosen to be used in competition at the World Barista Championships. In 2017 they won a presidential award in the Cup of Excellence, having a scored at 90+. Since then they have won five more Cup of Excellence international awards, and have been used several times for the World Barista Championships. Volcan Azul have now planted over 10 different lines of Geisha, in search of the highest quality.
