There are 3,515 smallholders living around Kayanza, Burundi who deliver their coffee cherries to Kibingo Central Washing Station. At the washing station, farmers can obtain organic fertiliser from composted coffee pulp. To promote farm renovation, producers can get low-cost, subsidized coffee seedlings at the washing station. Each station has its own nursery for this purpose. The station achieved 1st place in the 2017 Cup of Excellence, the same year that our importer Greenco were awarded 13 out of the 20 top places at the same awards.
Greenco strives to improve socio-economic and environmental conditions around all their washing stations, which includes Kibingo. One of their focus points is building an efficient supply chain, and they’re now buying 93% of their cherries directly from farmers. We worked with Greenco to obtain this coffee, which is different to anything we’ve sourced from Burundi before with a delicate, tea-like quality to it.
